Two Months, Five Lessons: My Internship Experience

“こんにちは!私はThang です!”

I’ve recently wrapped up my two-month summer internship at atWare Vietnam. During this time, I had the opportunity to experience different aspects of being a software engineer—not only the technical side, but also how to grow and work effectively as part of a team.

In this blog, I’d like to share some of the valuable lessons and experiences I gained along the way.

#1 Constantly learn and improve

I realized that the knowledge I had before my internship was just “a drop in the ocean”. During my internship, I was exposed to many practical aspects and had the opportunity to apply what I learned at school to a real-world project. This experience reminded me that continuous learning is essential.

There is still so much more to learn and discover in software engineering, especially at a time when AI is accelerating the pace of technological change. I need to keep expanding my knowledge and improving my skills throughout my career.

#2 Be open to challenges

I learned to see challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities to learn and step outside my comfort zone. When facing something unfamiliar, it can be tempting to give up when the solution is not immediately clear.

However, changing the way you look at a challenge can make a big difference. What may initially seem difficult can become an unforgettable and invaluable lesson. I believe that the challenges we face can be opportunities to discover what we are capable of and grow beyond our current limits.

#3 Keep asking “Why?”

One question we should always ask ourselves when doing something is “Why?”: “Why do we need to do this?”, “Why did we choose this approach?”, “Why does it work this way?”

Rather than simply following existing practices, asking these questions helps me understand the reasoning behind decisions and think critically. It encourages me to look beyond what we are doing and understand why we are doing it, allowing me to see the bigger picture.

#4 Learn from mistakes

One of the company’s core values that resonated with me is the importance of learning from every outcome, whether it is a success or a failure. Mistakes are not something to aim for, but they are inevitable when we are learning and taking on new challenges.

What matters is how we respond to them. By understanding what went wrong and applying those lessons to future situations, we can turn mistakes into opportunities to improve and achieve better results.

#5 What builds up a team?

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons I learned was that software engineering is not just about writing code-it is about working with people. I came to appreciate the importance of equality, respect, and empathy within a team.

Regardless of differences in age, experience, or position, everyone should have the opportunity to share their ideas and perspectives. A strong team is built when people feel comfortable contributing, listening to one another, and working toward a common goal.

The journey continues

Two months may not seem like a long time, but what I gained from this internship is beyond measure. I am especially grateful for my colleagues and mentors, who patiently guided and supported me throughout the journey, despite my lack of experience.

This internship marks the beginning of my career, and I feel truly fortunate to have had such a meaningful experience at the very start of my journey. I will carry these lessons, memories, and gratitude with me as I take my next steps forward.

Cam on vi da den!
